Scholarship opportunity for nurses
The Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) is now accepting applications for its annual Aged Care Nursing Scholarship Scheme.
Scholarships are available for undergraduate and postgraduate through the Commonwealth-funded program which is administered by the RCNA.
“We cannot underestimate the importance of aged care nurses in Australia,” said RCNA Executive Director, Rosemary Bryant.
“We have an ageing population and we’re facing a severe nursing shortage. These scholarships assist students and working nurses undertaking the study that will help them build on their skills and knowledge, and also emphasise the need for more nurses in this particular area of care.”
The undergraduate scholarships are open to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to aged care who plan to study nursing at an Australian university.
Successful undergraduate applicants will receive up to $5000 per semester with a maximum of $30 000 per person.
The postgraduate scholarships are available to Registered/Division 1 nurses, already working in aged care, who wish to do further study in the area. They can receive up to $10,000 each.
RNs who do not have a current practising certificate may apply for a scholarship if they plan to complete a re-entry course, or if they can demonstrate their eligibility to re-register.
Applications for the undergraduate scheme must be in by 5pm on Friday, 22 August and applications for the postgraduate scheme close at 5pm on Friday, 19 September.

Valencia grad wins Zonta scholarship
Allison Tamboline, a 2008 graduate of Valencia High School, has received a $1,000 Young Women in Public Affairs scholarship from Zonta Club of the Santa Clarita Valley.
After much deliberation, Tamboline was chosen from the seven impressive young women who had submitted applications this year, according to committee chair Gloria Mercado-Fortine.
“The caliber of applicants for this year’s award was impressive,” Mercado-Fortine said. “As this year’s Young Woman in Public Affairs recipient, Allison exemplifies the level of candidates who applied for the award.”
The award is given each year to a young woman in the local community who exemplifies Zonta’s mission of advancing the status of women. The local winner advances to district level competition, where that honoree is sent on to international competition. The intent of the program is to encourage young women to enter public service.
Tamboline is not only a gifted musician, but she has also demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. Through her many activities, Allison has helped to advance the status of women not only in her school, but also on an international level.
She has been involved with the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program as well as the World Leadership Congress in Washington D.C., where she met and worked with peers from around the world. She is currently president of Invisible Children of Uganda Club and participated in Lobby Day for Africa.
According to her scholarship application, Tamboline believes the most critical problem limiting the advancement of women worldwide is the lack of education. She believes that investing in women now will enable women to grow and educate others.

Scholarship Foundation Prepares Minority Students for the Future
Mercedes Gomez, an incoming freshman at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, believes students need to work harder than ever to succeed in the real world.
“A two-year degree does not get you far,” said Gomez, one
of 12 minority college students who attended The Hope Chest Scholarship Foundation’s training session earlier this month at The County College of Morris in Morristown.
The day-long Hope Chest LTD (Leadership, Training, and Development) Program stressed the importance of professionalism for achieving success.
Students met with 15 experts who told them what to expect in today’s working environment.
“It’s all about networking, networking, and networking,” said
Ivelisse Estremera, a Kean University incoming freshman who aspires to a career in law enforcement.
Last year, the nonprofit Hope Chest Scholarship Foundation awarded more than $105,000 in scholarships to some 60 minority students across New Jersey.
To qualify, students must write an essay, submit letters of recommendation, and have at least a B average in high school or college.
Networking through internships was an important concept that Foundation lecturers emphasized at the recent session.
To network successfully, they said, students should find mentors to coach and advise them.
“As college kids, we don’t know how to get into internships and how to use networking to get into a career,” said Dawan Buie, a Franklin Marshall College (PA) junior. “The ins and outs of interviewing, such as preparation, are crucial to any job or career that we will be pursuing.”
Riddi Bhatt, an incoming Rutgers University freshman, said the program enhanced his interviewing skills.
“I learned how to write a resume, biography, and a personal statement,” Bhatt said. “In addition, we were also given guidelines for the power colors of interviewing.”
Students also were counseled to strengthen their leadership skills by doing community volunteer work and joining outreach programs and committees.
Agnya Desai, who will be a freshman at the University of Connecticut this fall, appreciates the value of leadership.
“I was a yearbook editor at my high school,” Desai said. “Leadership and mentorship are very important skills to me, which made me apply for the scholarship.”
Other skills touched upon by the program included job search techniques, public speaking, personal appearance and time management.
Plies Announces NPO And $10,000 “Somebody Loves You” Scholarship Fund
Big Gates/Slip-N-Slide/Atlantic recording artist Plies has announced details of his very own non-profit organization, Big Gates and Plies Power Of Visions Foundation, Inc., as well as a scholarship program, the “Somebody Loves You” Scholarship Fund. This all comes as the Ft. Myers, Florida-bred rapper continues to ride the wave of success proven by his sophomore release, Definition Of Real, which debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200, selling 215,000 copies in its first week. In fact, the album’s first week sales gave Plies the highest selling first-week numbers in the history of Miami-based Slip-N-Slide Records.
Keeping in the tradition of Plies’ philanthropy, Big Gates and Plies Power Of Visions will provide funding for legal representation and aid to needy individuals, specifically those who are incarcerated, with the goal of promoting a more functional, productive, and just community. The organization will also provide educational forums, classes, workshops, trainings, opportunities, and other charitable activities aimed at individuals in the community, in particular focusing on rehabilitation.
In addition, Big Gates and Plies Power Of Visions will focus on promoting activities for youth and minorities, including education, mentorship, cultural experiences, and preventative measures aimed at combating incarceration in the Tampa and Ft. Myers, Florida areas.
The organization’s first effort will be the “Somebody Loves You” Scholarship Fund 2008 (named after the song “Somebody (Loves You)” from his current album), which is designed specifically for students attending an accredited college or university, who have a parent(s) that is presently incarcerated and who is financially disadvantaged. The scholarship is open to students who are currently enrolled or who will be entering school this fall. Two scholarships will be awarded to one male and one female in the amount of $5000 each.
According to a published Senate report in September of 2000, as many as 70 percent of children of incarcerated parents will become involved with the criminal justice system unless effective intervention strategies are set in place. Big Gates and Plies Power Of Visions, Inc. hopes to inspire and encourage these at-risk youth to break the cycle of incarceration. Co-founder Plies comments, “We want to provide those who have been and continue to be affected by the negative impacts of the prison system with a sense of hope, and to let them know that they are not forgotten. No matter what adversities one may face in life, one thing remains true – and that is that somebody loves you.”
