UK scholarship open to all

DOHA ?The Chevening Scholarship Scheme will be opened to all in Qatar this year. Officials from British Embassy, British Council and HSBC announced this at a press conference yesterday. Chevening Scholarship, administered by the British Council, offers exceptional candidates the opportunity to undergo post graduation in the United Kingdom. About 2,300 individuals across the world receive the scholarship every year. Usually, the scholarship is available to citizens of a country as one of the rules for selection implies that individuals should return to their home country and contribute to its socio-economic growth by applying information acquired in the UK. Talking to The Peninsula, Simon Winetrobe, Director, British Council-Qatar, said: “In Qatar, and also in other Gulf countries, residents play a major role. They occupy key positions and help in the development of the country.”

So, any individual selected from Qatar will have to return and support the developmental activities here irrespective of the nationality. Roddy Drummond, Charge d’Affaires and Head of Mission at British Embassy, addressing the press conference said that the scholarship is the door to an ‘elite’ network of individuals who have succeeded and lead in many countries. “We can work with young people and refine their ideas. Chevening will benefit them professionally and personally,”

he said. He added that priority would be given only to competent individuals irrespective of nationality. All the applications will be thoroughly checked and eligible ones would be short listed. The shortlisted candidates will have to attend interview to get the scholarship. British council will help the selected candidates to find out the right courses and universities. The scheme is only applicable for one year post graduate courses in selected fields.

It is proposed to choose three individuals from Qatar this year and the sponsorship will be shared by British Embassy, British Council and HSBC. Over the past nine years, 16 citizens have enjoyed the benefits of the scheme and are holding key positions in various organisations in Qatar. HSBC Qatar announced its continued support to the scheme during the conference. Nicole van Hattem, Senior Manager, HR Department, HSBC said that they were looking for leadership for HSBC in Qatar through the programme.

Applications can be downloaded from the British Council website and the deadline for applications is April 30.
