Teen’s flu research could net her $50,000 scholarship
MARSHFIELD, Wis. (AP) - A high school senior’s research into stemming flu transmission among children could earn her a $50,000 college scholarship.
Eighteen-year-old Emily Barker of Marshfield is 1 of 12 finalists in the Young Epidemiology Scholars Competition. Two winners will be announced Monday morning in Washington, D.C., and each will win a scholarship.
The contest is designed to spur students’ interest in the field of public health, particularly epidemiology. That’s the branch that explores patterns of diseases within populations and studies how to prevent and control outbreaks.
Barker’s project looked at how to reduce flu transmission during a pandemic. She concludes that attempts to reduce contact, such as closing schools, would be more effective than previously thought.
