Scholarship winner to be honored at TroyFest
Charles Henderson High School senior Kim Brewer has been named the winner of the annual Jean Lake Memorial Art Scholarship, which will presented at TroyFest.
Brewer was announced on Friday as the winner of the $2,000 scholarship to help further her studies in art.
“This is just amazing,” Brewer said. “The scholarship will be a very big help to me. I am very thankful.”
The scholarship is named for renowned local artist Jean Lake, the original namesake of the TroyFest arts festival, and has been awarded to a high school senior in Pike County for the past two decades.
Brewer will be formally presented as the scholarship winner on April 26, the first day of the TroyFest weekend. A selection of Brewer’s artwork will be on display throughout the festival.
Brewer’s art teacher, Pam Smith, said Brewer is the kind of art student a teacher “loves to have.”
“When you give her an assignment, she takes it to the next level and puts her own thought and creativity into it,” Smith said.
Brewer is an advanced placement art student who has recently completed a portfolio of 24 pieces for college credit. She said she has had a interest in art since she was young.
“I’ve been studying art since elementary school and, of course, I’ve always worked on art at home,” she said.
Brewer said she prefers traditional studio art and likes to work with acrylic paints and oil pastels.
Flowers are a frequent motif in her work.
“I enjoy things with curvy lines and dramatic shapes,” she said.
Brewer plans to start college at Troy University and eventually pursue a master’s degree in art therapy.
“I’m interested in being able to use art as a tool to help people get their emotions out,” Brewer said. “I want to use art to impact someone’s life.”
The scholarship is funded by the Troy Arts Council. Arts Council President Kristy Drinkwater said the ideal recipient is someone who not only is talented but will make good use of the funds.
Grade point average and ACT scores are considered in addition to artist skill.
“We’re looking for someone who is obviously talented in art, but we also hope to find someone who will use the scholarship well,” Drinkwater said.
TroyFest will be held April 26-27 in downtown Troy. The event is free.
