Blair wins Harris scholarship
Nikita Blair, student at Eric G. Lambert School in Churchill Falls, has been awarded the prestigious Dr. Leslie Harris Memorial University Alumni Association Scholarship for the 2008/09 school year.
This scholarship is valued at $16,000; that is $4,000 per year, renewable for up to three additional years, four years in total. Ms. Blair has an outstanding resume of sports participation at the provincial level, which was considered by the selection committee.
Ms. Blair was captain of the NLVA Provincial Elite Volleyball team in 2007; winner of two provincial individual sportsmanship awards in high school volleyball and captained that team; played on the provincial NLVA Elite volleyball team in 2006; was Master Corporal at the Provincial Junior Canadian Rangers leadership camp; captained the Girls provincial team that won silver at the provincial minor hockey; played on the Provincial Program of Excellence camp and was a participant at the Provincial Junior Canadian Rangers camp. Ms. Blair’s academic and sports achievements at the local level are just as impressive.
She was winner of Student of the Year honours, Senior High; Highest average, Grade 11 and Highest average in Chemistry, Physics, Biology and English; Highest Overall average in Grade 10, and Highest average in Math, Science and Canadian History; most valuable player awards in badminton, Volleyball and X-Country Running; captained the Girls Volleyball and the Girls Minor hockey team.
Ms. Blair was Social Director of the Student Council; first runner-up in the Miss Labrador Achievement Pageant; gold medal winner in the Labrador 500; regional individual sportsmanship award; top marksman with the Junior Canadian Rangers; member of FINALY and the School Band/Choir and she did volunteer work in the community.
“I was really pleased and excited when I opened the letter from Memorial,” she said when contacted by the Labradorian. “I won a previous scholarship, but I never expected this one. For someone like myself, travelling from a Labrador community, the financial help is going to offset my expenses.”
This scholarship is no doubt attributable to the high standards expected at Eric G Lambert School, Ms. Blair’s personal determination and drive and the family support of parents Ron and Peggy.
